Varallo Carnival Begins: The Veggia Pasquetta Ends Up on the Pyre
Yesterday evening, Sunday, January 5th, marked the start of the Varallo Carnival. As is tradition, the opening was led by the Dughi of Varallo Vecchio, who organized the “Gran Bal d’la Veggia.” The group appeared with the confirmed return of Cristian Calzino and Giorgia Miglio as the main masks, Dugo and Duga. Among the returning participants was Fabio Alberti, who has played the role of Dugo for many previous editions, joined by Mattia Valle, Federico Perrone, Martina Midolo, Lavinia Selene, and Sara Pellegrini.
Today Marks the Veggia Pasquetta Celebration
Today, Monday, January 6th, the city committee took to the streets to welcome Marcantonio in swaddling clothes and his mother, the Veggia Pasquetta. This year, the role was played by Simone Raffa, who, as always, tried every trick to evade capture by the guards and avoid her sentencing. However, there was no escape.
The official parade, accompanied by the city’s Musical Band and the group “Flag Throwers and Musicians of the Palio di Asti, Rione San Pietro,” started from Mario Tancredi Rossi Square. After being captured and condemned, the Veggia Pasquetta faced her fate: a puppet representing the mask was burned on the banks of the Mastallone River, beneath the Antonini Bridge.
Anticipation for the New Cecca
With today’s celebration, the carnival period has officially begun. Many residents of Varallo eagerly await the reveal of the 2025 Cecca, whose identity will be announced this Saturday during the “Gran Ball d’la Cecca,” scheduled for 10 p.m. at the “Italo Grassi” municipal gymnasium.
