In Vercelli area: three municipal police officers, including the commander, are under investigation for embezzlement and suspended. The commander resigns.
A bag containing €30,000 in cash, discovered in a park by a passerby and handed over to the municipal police, is at the center of a scandal shaking Borgosesia, a town of 12,000 residents in the province of Vercelli, Piedmont. The commander of the local police, Ruggero Barberis Negra, has resigned, with his decision accepted by Mayor Fabrizio Bonaccio, following the launch of an investigation involving three officers, including the commander himself. The alleged charge is embezzlement.
The mayor, Fabrizio Bonaccio, confirmed the news today via official channels. “We have learned,” he wrote on social media, “that investigations are underway involving three employees of our local police. Pending further developments, the judiciary will guide us on any necessary actions to take.”
The case began when a passerby found a bag filled with cash during a walk in Parco Magni, the city’s main green area. Showing great civic responsibility, they handed the money over to the municipal police headquarters. However, from that moment, the money vanished.
In recent days, the Carabinieri visited the municipal police headquarters to seize documents and materials relevant to the investigation. The three officers involved have been suspended from their duties and required to return their service weapons. It has also been reported that the officers searched the home of one of the accused.
